Sadly, around a 1/3 of people consider the birth of their baby to have been traumatic. Not all of these will go on to experience Birth Trauma symptoms or PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) but some do and it can have a devastating impact on their daily lives.
If this is you, I hope you will find the following information useful and feel able to reach out for support, you are not alone and you do not need to suffer in silence.
What is Birth Trauma?
There is no one specific experience that defines Birth Trauma, it relates more to how the person perceives their experience. Generally speaking the person may have experienced threat of injury or death, however some people are equally effected when there is a threat to their physical integrity. They often experience intense fear, helplessness or an inability to escape the situation.
One mother I supported told me:
“I was being monitored and everything seemed fine, then suddenly the babies heartbeat started dropping, everyone in the room panicked, buzzers were going off, all these people I’d not met before entered the room. The midwife started screaming ‘push, push, we need to get this baby out NOW!’ I’ve never felt so much fear in my life and even though the baby was OK, 3 months on I still wake up in a puddle of sweat and keep reliving what happened”.
What are the symptoms of Birth Trauma.
It’s important to keep in mind that symptoms vary from person to person and few people are diagnosed with PTSD, what is important is the impact it’s having on you.
Do I need an diagnosis before I can receive treatment?
No, you do not need a diagnosis.
Is it just for mothers?
No, fathers and Birth workers can be affected by witnessing a Traumatic Birth too, the technique can work for anyone experiencing the above symptoms.
What is the Rewind Technique and how will it help me?
The Rewind Technique is a really simple, easy, 3 step process that not only alleviates the symptoms you are experiencing day to day but also allows you to recall the memory of your birth without experiencing any negative emotions.
What will happen in each session?
In session one, we will spend a bit of time together discussing your birth experience, although if it is too painful too talk about you do not have to, we can just focus on how your birth is affecting your day to day life and the symptoms you are experiencing, I will then guide you through the deep relaxation process. For some clients, who have never experienced deep relaxation or guided meditation before, they may struggle to really relax, for this reason you will be given a link to listen to at home and practise prior to sessions two.
In session two I will check in with you to see how you have been getting on with the deep relaxation process and answer any concerns before we start the rewind technique. When you are ready I will guide you into deep relaxation and talk you through the process, step by step, enabling you to heal any pain or distress caused by the trauma and to relieve the symptoms you are currently experiencing. I will check in with you frequently and monitor you throughout the entire process to ensure you feel safe.
In session three we will review what difference the technique has made to your day to day life and check to see if you are still experiencing any symptoms. If for any reason you are still experiencing any symptoms we can repeat the process. Assuming that the symptoms have decreased or diminished I will lead you through the final step and help you to reinforce the qualities, skills and resources you need to continue living symptom free.
How do I know it will work for me?
As with most things in life, there is no absolute guarantee, all I can say is that I currently have 100% success rate working with this therapy.
How much does it cost?
The standard rate is £149 for all 3 sessions including resources.
Where are the sessions held?
I have a lovely practice room based at my home in Bournemouth, I also work from Wessex Health Network in Christchurch and offer sessions via videophone worldwide.
